Paul Kratter grew up in the Bay Area. His family spent many weekends exploring and hiking the unique landscapes of Northern California. Later, four years in the Art Center College in Pasadena prepared him for a life as a freelance illustrator. His earlier passion for wildlife focused the latter part of his illustration career on projects for the Nature Company, several national zoos, museums and a variety of children's books. And though retired from commercial illustration, his most recent book, "The Living Rainforest" written and illustrated by Paul Kratter was recently honored in Communication Arts in the book category.
After leaving his career as an illustrator, he resumed hiking in the rolling hills of the East Bay and began painting these landscapes. The ever changing light and the need to work fast as a result brought about a fresh and looser approach to his previous painting style. He hopes to explore the many and varied habitats of California and beyond, painting what he sees and feels in these locations. Paul Kratter has won a number of awards for his paintings.
